In Figure 7-14, we show a photo of the cover of a book using Color Efex Pro, which is a module in Photoshop CS5 that enables super-fast luminosity, contrast, and color correction, as well as the highly rated Radiance HDR and Radiant HDR plug-ins.
1. With the photo layer selected, use the Adjustment Panel (Windows) or Photoshop → Adjustments → Adjustment Panel (Mac) to set your first adjustment. In Figure 7-15 we have the base and white balance settings turned on.

2. Our next adjustment is to brighten the image by using Levels. For fast results, go to Image → Adjustments → Levels. In Figure 7-16, the image’s exposure has been adjusted to increase its light levels.

3. Create a clipping mask so that any changes we make to the photo are applied only within the frame. Use Layer → Create Clipping Mask to create a new layer. There’s a Hand tool (the little green hand icon) that enables you to apply a mask to a layer.

4. Now we use the Curves and Levels tools to further adjust the brightness and contrast to ensure that the photo is not too bright or too dark. Use the slider to set the curves as shown in Figure 7-17. In addition, you can use the Adjustment Brush to easily change parts of an image.

To apply these adjustments with a specific area, use the Select Color dialog box. Here you can choose a color to use as a mask for modifying an area of your image.
5. By now you probably have some sense of which tools, or combinations of tools, you will use the most. It’s time to create an adjustment layer to make a final, one-click change to your image.

Electrodeposited palladium, platinum, and gold coatings are currently employed in a wide variety of applications, for example, in the formation of catalytic electrodes for fuel cell and other electrochemical cells. Such coatings, e.g., the Pd-O and Pt-O bonds, have excellent durability and are relatively stable in acidic and alkaline solutions. A commonly employed method for achieving thickness control is electroplating, e.g., anodically depositing the metal on a rotating cathodic metal strip. This is a method of choice when precise control of the deposit thickness is needed, as it permits one to precisely control the current density and the time of the electrodeposition. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 4,262,013, to Loughran, Jr. et al., describes a method for electroplating an electrode in which the current density is controlled by rotating the electrode during the electrodeposition, while U.S. Pat. No. 4,433,010, to Pou, describes a method wherein the thickness is controlled by rotating a current source.
The control of electrodeposition of such coatings by controlling the voltage and current is a difficult and imprecise process. This is best understood by considering the behavior of the current density as a function of time during the electrodeposition of the metal. This problem has been previously addressed in different contexts, see, e.g., “Production of Thick, Uniform Electroplated Metal Films” (1953) by Heyndels and in “Electrodeposition: Fundamentals and Industrial Applications” (1966) by Van den Berg and Matthews. In any event, it is known that the rate at which deposition takes place on a metal strip is proportional to the average current per unit area (the average current density) and is inversely proportional to the square root of the absolute value of the difference between the deposition potential and the average potential across the metal strip. This relationship means that the average current density will be higher when the difference between the average potential and the deposition potential is lower; however, this is usually achieved at the expense of the deposition time, because the average potential is usually set at a higher level. Thus, the average current density is not sufficiently high

Talking Books
It turns out that the dog treats we ordered recently came in ten pound bags. Based on the advice we’ve received before, we’re going to order again, this time ten pound bags. For the record, we’ve never ordered dog treats before and it’s been more than a year since our last visit to the pet store.
And it also turns out that the books we ordered were no longer available. The second one was out of print and the first one is too big for the cottage. I’m probably going to make some modifications and buy them again. We like them both.
We finished reading “Mrs. Dale’s Diary” this weekend. It was a charming read and it seemed like a bit of a tribute to Gwen Stefani’s music, her husband and daughter. It also gave us a glimpse into the struggles of a single mother. You can check out the audiobook version here.
“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” has been a very popular book at Two Penny Street. We’ve now moved on to “The Faraway Tree”, which we’re enjoying even more than the first one.
I don’t mean to be discouraging, but I’m finding that I’m not loving a lot of the books that I’ve read lately. I find myself wanting to tell people what I’m reading and I’m not really enjoying it that much. I feel that I’m putting too much pressure on myself. Does anyone else have this problem?
