One of the most useful tools in Photoshop is the _mask_ tool, which you can use to mask out certain areas of your image. Masks in Photoshop are much like layers in other software programs. They are areas of your image where the effect of the overall image is not desired. You can use the mask tool to selectively remove areas of the image that you don’t want to appear in the final product. Then, you can also use the mask tool to place a new layer on top of the mask. This feature is used frequently when you are inserting a new object into your image and you want to mask out the original area of your image where it would be.
Photoshop allows you to use the “Erase” tool to easily remove the mask from your image. In Figure 2-9, notice that the areas on the top left are still there. These are areas that I don’t want to appear in my final image. It is a good practice to remove these areas using masks, because you can always go back and replace them.

Masks are used frequently when designing your images to create strong design elements. You’ll often find that the mask tools are used to create the background of a design, and the additional design elements are then placed on top of the

As a graphic design tool, Photoshop Elements is used to add effects to images, such as changing a color to black and white, photo tinting, making a shape like a star and adding collages. Photoshop Elements can be used to create professional-looking print-ready images, as well as web graphics.
This guide to using Photoshop Elements to edit, convert and optimize images will be more basic than other guides. The focus is on the workflow and use of the program’s features, rather than getting really tricky stuff like creating layers, clipping paths and 3D textures.
If you’d like to use Photoshop Elements’ filters or editing features but you don’t want to use the regular Photoshop GUI, follow this guide instead. You’ll be able to use all of the tools and features of Photoshop Elements.
This tutorial is also available in Spanish and Portuguese.
This guide is for Photoshop Elements 12, the latest version of the program available in the Mac App Store. The tutorial isn’t specific to any version of Photoshop Elements because all Photoshop Elements applications work the same way.
The following is a basic guide to using Photoshop Elements. You’ll learn how to import, edit, convert, resize and optimize images with Photoshop Elements.
Some of the editing in Photoshop Elements can be complex, and the interface is similar to a photo editing program, so this guide won’t cover all of the tricks for editing photos in Photoshop Elements, but rather the typical workflow you’d use to make an image. To learn more advanced Photoshop Elements features, check out our guide to using Photoshop Elements to edit, convert and optimize images.
Importing and Working with Your Photos
The first step is to import your photos and move them to the folder where you want to edit them.
To import a photo, go to File > Import > Photos (or click the Import button on the main screen). Click the Settings button to the right to show the preview and import options.
The Import Photos dialog box contains all of the options for importing an image.
When you are ready to import, click the button next to the photo you want to import. The photo will appear in the preview area. Click the Import button on the upper-right side of the window. If the Photos tab is selected instead of Import Photos, click the photo you want to import and then click Import at the top

The Stone is a forum for contemporary philosophers and other thinkers on issues both timely and timeless.
Joseph Raz, University of Oxford
In “Constitutional Democracy: A Normative Reassessment,” published last year by the Princeton University Press, Joseph Raz argues that the United States is an example of a “constitutional democracy” — a form of government whose constitutional protections provide a compromise between two ideas: “of all possible ways of organizing a society, a democratic one is the most suitable,” he says, and “of all possible constitutions, a democratic one is the best.”
“We have given up, in important parts of the world at least,” he warns, “the pursuit of the Constitution, of what constitutions are for, as a goal in its own right.”
The original collection of source materials that Mr. Raz has drawn upon for his latest book, “The Morality of Freedom: Rousseau’s Political Theory,” left little space for discussing the ontological status of political institutions or for investigating whether there is anything more to political institutions than their size and power.
Mr. Raz, unlike some other contemporary political theorists who pay little attention to questions about the value of democracy, thinks that it is valuable for its own sake.
“The moral value of constitutional democracy,” he argues, “is simply that it incorporates two desirable values — the value of solidarity and the value of autonomy.”
“Solidarity,” Mr. Raz explains, “refers to the idea that people should regard each other as persons.” Autonomy is usually taken to mean something like “having one’s own life as one wishes.” And because people naturally have a deep aversion to being treated as though they were mere means — or “things” — they are also drawn to regard each other as persons and to permit each other maximum freedom to determine their own ends.
The political theorist H. L. A. Hart claimed that the fact that a democratic society “has a framework of laws is an expression of the fact that its members are persons, or take them to be, and that the rules of the society are adopted for and in their name and so are adopted on their behalf.” Mr. Raz argues that if democracy were not valuable for its own sake, then it would not be worth preserving, and

Safe use of the JMS classloader to deploy in production environments
I’m working on a large scale system that is used in production. My JMS server is deployed as part of this system. Recently, I had to deploy a bugfix that broke the JMS client code – so to fix it, I had to redeploy the whole system.
As part of my development, I wanted to use the JMS classloader:
The classloader allows code to access resources via JMS without being directly involved with the deployment of the JMS server. So you can have code that runs in a production environment, with as much as JMS access as you want – or just via an admin user account.
The only problem is that if you use the classloader, the JARs in the WAR are deployed to the application server along with the JARs from the local Maven repository.
The classloader should be used carefully, because it is not very forgiving when not used properly:
The classloader is deployed by default in container environments such as Jetty and Tomcat. We have been running it in an Apache Karaf bundle for a couple of years, because the lack of a classloader was a problem for us. Karaf is a self contained OSGi container, so the classloader is not in the classpath by default.
When deploying a bundle, the classloader is usually not in the bundle.jar, so you need to put it into the webapp for example.
There have been many blog posts about the dangers of exposing custom JARs that are not part of the WAR. This is easily avoided by putting the classloader into the WAR file.
Now, the classloader has several issues with deploying in production.
It can cause issues on different class loaders: a class with the same name is loaded twice, which can cause an exception, so you have to check the logs carefully.
The classloader is not available when started via JMX or JMS, so you can’t use a JMX client to access the JMS server.
The classloader can cause ClassNotFoundExceptions, and the classloader doesn’t provide a way of ignoring exceptions.
The classes need to be
