Cyberforge: First Light is a 2003 science fiction action-adventure game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment. It is the first game in the Cyberforge series, following Interplay’s Cyberpunk 2001. First Light was released on July 1, 2003 in North America and the following day in Europe. Set in the year 3775, a single-tactical round spaceship called the Deus Engine transports its pilot (a disgruntled Federal Bureau of Tether or “FBT”) and two companions, into an open world populated by the remnants of a former planet (known as Lower Sodom after their corruption by PlanetQuest, a megacorp who founded the Oasis Labs), referred to as “Cube” by other citizens, and by a group of scavengers known as Eurekas. The Deus Engine and its passengers must solve environmental problems in the city and help Eureka defeat PlanetQuest. In addition to the standard military actions, squad tactics and combat system, First Light contains metagame features such as the “Liberty Board”—a map of the city which features human and non-human territories—that affect gameplay.
First Light received mixed reviews upon its release and did not perform well commercially.
Gameplay
Elite players of First Light must use strategy and tactics during combat, as well as logistics and teamwork. Given the open world environment in which they will be fighting, the team must make use of all of these elements to survive. The Deus Engine plays the role of the main character, and in addition to fighting, it must be ready to drive and deploy as needed. Members of the team can be called upon to assist in other areas including repair, hacking and scanning, and transporting people and materials.
The gameplay is similar to that of the original MechWarrior engine, featuring all four classes of combat, dynamic cover, stationary and moving units, and various types of vehicles and utility vehicles. As with most MechWarrior games, players may also be able to name a unit to their roster. Historically, MechWarrior games did not have any player control over what class their unit was, though this became an option in MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries.
